TMTG 054: 5 Ways To Market Yourself in Muay Thai

Training and preparing for a fight is one thing, but marketing yourself and focusing on the business side of Muay Thai is something that is commonly overlooked by fighters, coaches and gym owners.
Now don’t get me wrong, marketing yourself does NOT automatically qualify you as a Muay Thai expert or as a top fighter.
However, developing and building your personal brand as you continue your Muay Thai career will help you share your story, reach a wider audience and open up opportunities that might have otherwise passed you by.

TMTG 037: 5 Risks to Take to Gain Respect, Success, and Happiness

The Muay Thai Guys Podcast - Episode 37

Muay Thai is a risky endeavor in itself, and as a calculated human beings it has taught us to take risks that have shaped us into who we are today.

Risk is a reward in itself - despite the result you learn a lot about yourself, that you are willing to take a shot at greatness, at something better - no one has ever become extraordinary by playing it safe. Paul and I discuss the 5 risks we've taken to get to where we are today in our careers/life, which include:
  1. Living off the Beaten Path - Living in a world without a set blueprint proves to be difficult, but it also proves to be truly fulfilling and rewarding in terms of happiness, success, and the respect you receive from others.
  2. Short Notice Opportunities - You have very little time to think about this, as human beings we are able to place less of a burden on an event that we haven't had a lot of time to analyze or think about. ("It is not always the best in the world that day that wins, but the best who shows up")
  3. Leaving Your Job to Pursue Your Passion - It can be a scary thing leaving a "stable" job to pursue your "crazy" dreams, but without taking the leap and truly going 100% in it will be extremely difficult to accomplish your ultimate goals.
  4. Separating Yourself from the Old (Habits, Friends, and Relationships) - In order to evolve we must move forward, with this many of the habits, friends, and relationships you once held begin to dissipate. It is a risk as you may lose a connection you feel like you "owe", a coach who started you off, a friend who was there for you, and a relationship in which you once had something special.
  5. Putting Yourself Out There - Being vulnerable and sharing your insecurities can be hard to do. But being able to share your story (whether good OR bad) is a great way to build a network of likeminded people who will help you stay on the right path towards your goals.

Although many have this dream, only a handful are truly willing to work hard enough AND make the necessary sacrifices to make the dream a reality. Sponsored Nak Muay Nation fighter, Sylvie Von Duuglas-Ittu, is one of the few people dedicated enough to actually move to Thailand to train and fight full-time... and with 150+ fights under her belt it doesn't look like she's stopping any time soon.

  • What made her decide to first travel to Thailand to train Muay Thai.
  • How after her first trip to Thailand all she could think about was how to make it back.
  • Why she decided to move her life to The Land Of Smiles to pursue her passion for Muay Thai.
  • The steps she took to make her dream a reality... and the ups and downs that she's faced while pursuing it.
  • How gambling plays a MAJOR role in fighting - and how she believes it's not as bad as most westerners believe.
  • Gambling lingo and etiquette and how the "sidebet" is important for her making enough money to live.
  • Why she initially lived in Chaing Mai but then decided to live in the infamous city of Pattaya.
  • What her website (8limbs.us) and new podcast are all about and how they've been an integral part of her journey.
  • Different types of logistics when it comes to living in Thailand, including visas, picking a gym and more.
  • And much MUCH more!

TMTG 033: Muay Thai Supplement Chat with Jerry Teixeira of PNP Supplements

The Muay Thai Guys Podcast - Episode 33

10633792_10154571760768496_4127951241823785429_oEarly on in my career I avoided taking supplements for my Muay Thai training because I used to be HARD into the type of shitty supplements that destroy your body and get you killed, i.e. Jack3d, NO xplode etc. I was also a believer in getting all my nutrients directly from natural foods, but after doing more research I decided it'd be beneficial to my training if I added healthy supplements to my routine.
And that's where I found Jerry Teixeira of PNP Supplements.
If you've been following Muay Thai Guy you've probably heard of Jerry and PNP Supplements before, but this time we get to chat with him about his company and supplements to pick his brain on a few things:
  • How and why he got started creating supplements.
  • Why "Cardio Surge" was his first supplement and how it became a big hit with athletes.
  • Why he believes having a good, healthy diet is important before supplementing.
  • What made him decide to work on this business full time and escape the 9-5.
  • What his goals are for PNP Supplements.
  • And much more!

TMTG 032: 10 Mistakes Made When Training Muay Thai in Thailand

The Muay Thai Guys Podcast – Episode 32

Everyone makes mistakes when they first make the voyage to Thailand to train Muay Thai, but you can avoid some of these common mistakes by learning from people who’ve already made them… like myself and Paul.
In this most recent podcast episode, Paul and I discuss the most common mistakes we made (and still continue to make) whenever we make the trip to Thailand. If you’re heading to Thailand in the near future, this podcast is a MUST listen to because it covers the top 10 mistakes including:
  1. muay thai in thailand khongsittha gymNot Doing It Sooner – Putting off your trip to Thailand can result in you NEVER making the trip. The sooner you go the better because it will open new doors of opportunity for you and open your eyes to new possibilities.
  2. Not Planning Ahead – Although you want to do it as soon as possible, you do need to plan accordingly in order to make sure you have enough money and plan the proper itinerary for your trip. Taking time off work, saving money and putting everything in order is key in order to have a successful trip abroad.
  3. Overpacking – It’s going to happen. Try to avoid packing excess clothes, books and memorabilia that won’t be necessary for your trip. More often than not, you can pick up extra clothes and accessories while in Thailand for MUCH cheaper than back home. Plus, carrying extra luggage around while your traveling throughout Thailand is a major pain in the ass.
  4. Falling Into The Sexy Trap – The nightlife can consume you with exotic dancers, ladyboys, ping pong shows and the crazy raves.
  5. Not Falling Into The Sexy Trap – Although you don’t want to succumb to temptaion on a regular basis, it is important to enjoy your time in Thailand by making sure you experience the culture and other things it has to offer other than the training… just keep it balanced!
  6. Drinking The Tap Water – JUST DON’T DO IT!!!
  7. Not Taking Your Shoes Off – It’s customary to take your shoes off when entering peoples homes or places of worship. If you see a line of shoes on the outside of a store, you should take off your shoes to show respect.
  8. Scams – There are all types of scams from motorbike renters to tuk-tuk drivers and more. Do your research and go to Thailand with an idea of what type of scams most tourists fall trap to.
  9. Not Taking Photos Of Rentals – Like I mentioned, it is very easy to get scammed by motorbike (and other) rentals if you aren’t careful, so make sure you take pictures of whatever you rent so you can prove that there was no damage done when you return your vehicle.
  10. Becoming Frustrated/Angry – The Thai’s are mild-mannered people and they see it as disrespectful if you show too much emotion or anger when out in public or during training.
