TMTG 083: "Shortcuts" To Becoming a Muay Thai Champion

Lets get right to the point: There are no real "shortcuts" to becoming a champion.

That being said, the "shortcuts" we're discussing here are ways to efficiently and proactively pursue greatness by following the lead of past and present champions. By studying the habits, characteristics and attributes of elite level fighters, we can better understand the amount of work, sacrifice and discipline it takes to get a nice shiny belt strapped around your waist.

In Paul's recent article "The 3 Shortcuts To Becoming A Champion", he dissects the work ethic and practices of champion fighters. We take the lead from that article but dive even deeper into the subject in this week's podcast:

TMTG 082: Overcoming Training (and Life) Obstacles

Life has a way of testing us every now and again by throwing various challenges our way. It's up to us to decide how we react to these challenges. We can either play victim or use it to our advantage.
In this week's podcast, Paul and I break down the benefits of obstacles and tips for overcoming them, including:
  • How a resilient mindset is key to success in any endeavor you choose to pursue.
  • Why failure isn't an option unless you allow it to be.
  • How we got hit with a tropical storm during a Muay Thai Retreat in Costa and used that to our advantage.
  • Why challenges and obstacles are so important for developing character.
  • Paul's story of his "Fast and Furious: Thailand Edition" that came from an unforeseen challenge.
  • How you can still find some good when dealing with challenges outside of training, even when it's the death of a loved one.
  • Why developing the fighters heart is critical for growth as a human being.
  • And much, much more

TMTG 079: The Importance of Over Training

Overtraining is a weird topic to discuss because there are a variety of intricate philosophies on it... including ours.

When I first started Muay Thai my philosophy on overtraining was quite different than it is now. Before I thought it was important to avoid overtraining so you can continue on with your training without worrying about burnout - but now I feel like overtraining (at least once in your career) is a crucial for your success because it will develop mental toughness while giving you a better understanding of how hard you can push your body.

In this most recent podcast, Paul and I discuss our evolution of theory when it comes to overtraining.

We also cover topics such as:

Signs of Overtraining:
  1. Usually in combination of one another:
  2. Fevers/Chills/Easily Getting Sick
  3. Full Body Aches
  4. Multiplying Injuries
  5. Depression and Fatigue Despite Regular Sleeping Patterns
Helpful Tactics in Avoiding or Reducing the Severity
  1. Self Assessment of Whether You Are a Bitch or Not
  2. Consistent Team of Coaches Around You That See Changes in Performance and Behavior
  3. Progression [Sink or Swim Works for Some]
  4. Studying Your Body & Mind and its Patterns
  5. Recovery Work and Nutrition

TMTG 078: Paul’s Top 10 Rules of Travel in Thailand (and Asia)

Traveling to a foreign country - especially Thailand - can be a bit stressful if you're not sure exactly what to expect. Fortunately, Paul and I have traveled to Thailand a combined 12 times and have spent over 3+ years combined in "The Land of Smiles", so we decided to share some lesser known travel rules to consider when making to journey to the mecca of Muay Thai:

1. Going Panty-Less Commando - Yes, that's right. At first it might seem counterintuitive, but after spending enough time in the blistering heat of Thailand you soon begin to realize how not wearing any underwear can make things a bit more comfortable for you.

2. Butt Guns on Arrival - What is a "butt gun" you might ask? Well, instead of the traditional toilet paper you would use in the western world, you have butt guns to hose yourself down after taking a crap. Very eccentric.

3. Unlock and Sim Card Up - Instead of getting charged ridiculous international costs by your home phone provider, unlock your phone so you can grab a cheap SIM card to keep connected at all times and have a Thai phone number to connect with other locals.

4. Uber and Grab Taxi / Lyft Apps - Getting a taxi can be a struggle in Bangkok, especially since it's likely that your cab driver doesn't speak English. Avoid the confusion and just download one of these apps to make traveling in Thailand a bit easier.

5. WhatsApp and LINE - The premier messaging apps in Thailand are a must if you want to stay in contact with everyone local and abroad. Instead of using minutes, you can use date (which is really cheap if you get a SIM card).

6. Basic Pricing on Sunglasses, Hotels, Clothing, Food - Don't get ripped off at the local markets or hotels and make sure you know what the costs are for the basic stuff.

7. Finding the Best Food and Cafes - You're in Thailand, somewhere you've never been before, so how do you find the best foods and cafes? You can explore yourself or ask the locals because their isn't going to be any Yelp reviews to help you out.

8. Learn the Names of Your Favorite Dishes in Their Native Language - If you're able to speak even "nit noi" (a little) Thai, the Thai people will love you for trying. Plus it will make it easier for you to order foods without getting something you didn't expect... which is bound to happen either way!

9. The Daily Adventure - Most of us go to Thailand to train Muay Thai, but don't forget about the other aspects of Thailand that make it so unique and beautiful.

10. Visa Recap - Knowing what types of visas you can get will make your trip that much more enjoyable and less stressful

TMTG 077: If I Fight In Thailand... Am I A Pro Fighter Now?

A hot topic nowadays is whether or not you automatically become a pro fighter if you take a fight in Thailand.

Recently, MTG writer Angela Chang wrote about her thoughts on the topic in this post, but now it's time for Paul and I to discuss our thoughts and breakdown what we think fighting in Thailand really means. We discuss things such as:
  • The different levels of fighting in Thailand
  • Why every fight in Thailand is technically "professional", although it's not professional level
  • What type of promotions and shows are professional level in Thailand (and which ones are not)
  • Whether or not fighting in Thailand makes you a pro when you come back to your home country
  • The different levels and categories of Muay Thai (amateur, semi-pro, pro etc.)
  • Our experiences fighting in Thailand and how we differentiate our amateur fights vs. our pro fights.
  • And much, much more!

TMTG 076: An Inside Look At The Lion Fight 37 Championship Title Fight

The Muay Thai Guys Podcast - Episode 76

This past Friday night was yet another great night of fights put on at Foxwoods by Lion Fight promotion. With two high level title fights on the line there was an incredible show of technique, heart, respect and skill.

Co-host of The Muay Thai Guys podcast, Paul "The Reaper" Banasiak was in the co-main event where he faced off against another undefeated pro fighter, Chip Moraza-Pollard. After a tough, technical, fast paced 5 round war Chip's hand got raised as the new cruiserweight title holder for Lion Fight.

In this podcast, Paul discusses his thoughts on the fight including:
  • What his game plan as going into the fight and how it played out.
  • How he feels ok about the performance he put on because he left it all out there.
  • Why he felt like he was down going into the end of the 5th.
  • What type of plans he has in the near future.
  • A look inside the mind of what he was thinking throughout the context of the fight.
  • And much, much more!

TMTG 075: The Muay Thai & Life Balance: Prioritizing, Sacrificing and Evolving To Reach Excellence

When we first being our Muay Thai journeys we tend to schedule our training around our work and life routine. As we become more and more addicted to Muay Thai there comes a time where our priorities shift, and instead of scheduling training around life, schedule our life around our training.

In this weeks podcast, Paul and I discuss the gradual evolution of our work, life and training balance as we've continued to dive deeper into our Muay Thai careers. We discuss a number of topics including:
  • How champion fighters like Ognjen Topic and "Bazooka" Joe Valtellini have been able to balance their full-time jobs with their fight training and careers.
  • The importance of deciding early on how seriously you're going to take your Muay Thai career and dedicating yourself (and your life) to it.
  • Why eliminating distractions, bad influences and time-killing activities is key to getting the most out of your day to day.
  • Sacrificing sleep, social life and other areas of your life to pursue greatness.
  • The idea of "planning spontaneity" and learning how to roll with the punches that life throws at you.
  • How reading books like "Outliers" and "The Obstacle Is The Way" can inspire and teach you the ways of excellence.
  • The importance of planning - your training, your nutrition, your rest days, everything!
  • And much, much more

TMTG 074: The Beginners Mindset & Training At Different Gyms

Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced fighter, it's always important to have the "beginners" mindset whenever you hit the training floor if you truly want to reach the highest levels.

In this weeks podcast, Paul and I catch up and discuss our thoughts on the beginners mindset and how critical it's been for our success both inside the Muay Thai world and outside of it. We also cover other topics such as...
  • How being the top dog at your gym isn't always the best thing.
  • The importance of occasionally training at different gyms with different training partners and coaches.
  • Why we see so many top level fighters focus on the basics.
  • How Paul and I are still getting used to being recognized as "The Muay Thai Guy" whenever we are traveling.
  • Paul's training at CSA and how it's been improving him physically and mentally.
  • Sean's analysis of his training with Namsaknoi and the importance of angles, footwork and balance.
  • How watching fights on TV are completely different than watching fights in person.
  • Why you shouldn't judge someones power, speed or technique just by watching one of their fights - and how different it is when you're standing right across from them.
  • And much, much more!

TMTG 073: Muay Thai Gym Etiquette: Do's and Dont's

There are some unwritten rules when it comes to stepping foot into a new gym. However, most people are unaware of these unwritten rules because, well - they're unwritten.

Fortunately, MTG writer Angela Chang put together a great post a few weeks back on the 13 Rules For Proper Gym Etiquette, which gave Paul and I the idea to cover the same topic in podcast form... so that's exactly what we did!

We cover the 13 aspects that Angela talk about but go into further detail about each area including:
  • Don't be late! Show up on time and show that you're ready to put in the work.
  • No shoes on the mat. Should be quite obvious, but people tend to neglect it.
  • Get your own gear. Sometimes gyms have lender equipment, but you're always better off using your own (for cleanliness purposes)
  • Clean your gear. Sanitize, air out and keep good care of your gear if you don't want to get any infections.
  • Keep basic hygiene. Don't be that smelly bastard who clinches with everyone without showering for days and no deodorant.
  • Wear underwear. This shouldn't have to be said... but it does.
  • Do what you're told. The trainers and coaches know what they're talking about (most of the time) so don't be disrespectful by acting like you're above them and doing your own thing.
  • Don't spar at 100%. Don't be that asshole trying to hurt everyone!
  • Clinch hard, knee soft. Clinching can be a little more intense, but make sure you're not spearing knees into your partners ribs and causing injury.
  • Wash your hands/yourself before clinching. If you have an extra shirt to throw on before going into clinch class, your training partners will thank you.
  • Respect everyone. Respect is the centerpoint of Muay Thai, show make sure to show respect to all skill levels and ages.
  • Be realistic. Know that it will take time to get good!

TMTG 072: Thailand Prison Fights, Muay Thai at MSG and Lion Fight Title Talk

Sometimes you just gotta hit record and just talk Muay Thai - and that's exactly what Paul and I did in the most recent podcast episode. With so much going on in the Muay Thai scene it's easy to find things to talk about, such as:
  • The 'Thailand Prison Fights' and the controversy surrounding the recently released documentary (seen below).
  • How Muay Thai plays such a major role in the culture and society of Thailand.
  • The craziness of being the foreigner fighter who steps in the ring with a murderer who has a chance to win his freedom.
  • The comparison of how Muay Thai fighters are modern day gladiators.
  • Why Thai kids fight and why western culture has trouble wrapping their heads around it.
  • How people call us by our "alter egos" and still can't spell or pronounce our names right.
  • The fights at Madison Square Garden and what it's like fighting at the worlds most famous arena.
  • A quick recap of the main event between Tum Sityodtong and Ognjen Topic.
  • Becoming the victim and how it leads directly to failure and underachievement
  • How Joe Rogan's "Become your own hero" video/speech is so powerful.
  • Paul's upcoming title fight at Lion Fight Promotions.
  • And much, much more!

TMTG 071: 10 Muay Thai Myths Debunked

Chances are you've heard of at least one bogus fad or myth inside the Muay Thai world that makes you question everything about the world, am I right?

Well, thanks to the suggestion of podcast fan Antonio, Paul and I go "Muay Thai Myth Busters" edition where we chat about and debunk a number of the common myths that many people believe to be true, such as:
  1. Sex before competition impedes testosterone, aggression, and primal acuity in performance
  2. Elevation masks improve your cardio and make it so that you are training at elevation.
  3. New training methods that take your game to the next level
  4. Headgear prevents brain damage
  5. Shin conditioning with pipes, bottles, and kicking trees to “deaden” the nerves.
  6. Fighters love violence and are mean people.
  7. Muay Thai is a traditional martial art rooted in passion and respect where the wai kru music plays everyday during training and you have to bow to every object around you
  8. Size doesn’t matter - Sorry guys, and girls. . . it does
  9. You must be a champion fighter to have any sort of legitimacy as a trainer
  10. The best fighters are the most well known and respected'

TMTG 069: A Champions Uprising with Chris "CROM" Romulo

We all think of champions as fighters who step in the ring, fight their heart out, and come away with a championship belt around the waist. Well, former WKA champion Chris Romulo is a champion in that sense AND a champion in the sense of overcoming many of lives obstacles that were thrown his way.

For those of you who don't know Chris or "CROM", he's been a major part of the NY Muay Thai community for decades and continues to have a positive influence on all those who surround him. Not only has he overcome multiple injuries to win a professional title, he also faced and conquered even more challenges when Hurricane Sandy hit his home town of Rockaway Beach back in 2012.

In this podcast, we talk about Chris' life story and his new book "Champions Uprising" which will be released on Amazon tomorrow (May 15th). Some of the topics which are covered are:
  • The struggles of growing up surrounded by a bad crowd and how a street fight almost ended his life.
  • How Muay Thai changed his life's direction and the lessons learned throughout his fight career.
  • What gave him the idea to write a book and his insights on difficult it was to relive some of his tough past experiences.
  • What "Physical Culture" is and why he's a big believer in living an active, healthy lifestyle.
  • How Hurricane Sandy destroyed his gym and his home and almost "KO'ed" his will to continue his training and teachin Muay Thai.

We thought it would be more fun interacting with the community on Facebook Live... and we were right!

Being able to answer a variety of fan questions live while covering a wide range of topics was a great time, so we'll definitely be doing it again in the future. We also gave away free Muay Thai Guys/Girls Do It Better T-Shirts, so you won't want to miss the next one!

Since we had thousands of people tune in throughout the show, we had plenty of things to chat about. Here we're some of the questions we tackled:
  • The pros and cons of weight cutting and how to cut weight the healthy way.
  • What do you recommend for weight training? Full body or push/pull/legs? Also, are there any plans for a curriculum for those that can't get into their gym often?
  • What is Chris Mauceri's next step? Is he staying kickboxing for now or also fighting Muay Thai?
  • When does Paul plan on fighting again? And with what promotion?
  • When does Sean want to get back into the ring?
  • When should a fighter hang them up? If they haven't taken a bunch of damage over the years is it different? Or is it an age thing as well?
  • Do you think one sanctioning body to overlook the sport would be beneficial? I don't know about the US but there are so many different sanctioning bodies that all score differently. What do you think?
  • What's the key to getting Muay Thai to the level of Glory and other kickboxing promotion?
  • I have my Kru certification in Thailand for Muay Thai. Does that mean anything to real fighters who fight Muay Thai?
  • What do you think about a potential matchup between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor? Do you believe Muay Thai needs a crossover fight to gain more exposure?
  • And many other awesome questions!

TMTG 067: Inside The Fight: Paul Banasiak Talks Big Win at Lion Fight 36

Friday night at Foxwoods Casino marked the 36th show of the top US Muay Thai promotion, Lion Fight. Co-headlining the card was two highly skilled fighters who also happened to be friends of Nak Muay Nation, Paul "The Reaper" Banasiak, and seasoned veteran Brett Hlavacek... and they didn't disappoint.

Both fighters showed tremendous poise, precision and technique throughout the 5 round fight which was a nail biter all the way till the last round. With the first four rounds split even, both fighters knew that the 5th round was going to be the determining factor in who came out the winner.

When the bell rang at the end of the night, it was Paul who got his hand raised due to his forward pressure, strong clinch game, and clean striking.

Paul talks about the fight and everything surrounding it in this weeks podcast.

TMTG 066: Muay Thai Ranking Systems, Kru Certifications & More

You've heard about kru certifications, right? And I'm sure you've heard Joe Rogan mention that a fighter is a "black belt" in Muay Thai. These two topics are two of the most controversial and most often discussed topics in the Muay Thai community today.

TMTG 064: The Growth of Muay Thai in the US with Lion Fight President Scott Kent

A big step in Muay Thai getting the recognition it deserves is being televised to a worldwide audience... and that's exactly what Scott Kent and Lion Fight have been able to do the past few years with their deal on AXS TV. Paul and I had the chance to sit down with Scott in this weeks podcast to talk to him about the growth of the sport in the US as well as other important topics.

Adjusting back to the Western lifestyle, philosophy, and the training regimen can be a difficult task, but it can also serve as an opportunity to create the perfect balance.
In this week's episode Paul and I discuss some of the main points that come with the reverse culture shock:

TMTG 060: What Muay Thai Gym Should I Train at in Thailand?

"What training camp should I go to in Thailand?"

This is by far one of, if not THE most asked question Paul and I get from fans from all over the world. And guess what? We almost never have a good answer to give because it depends on such a wide variety of factors including your goals, budget, likes/dislikes, experience, etc.

Instead of giving a vague answer to this extremely common question, we figured that covering it in detail in a podcast would be the best way to go. So, if you are in the midst of deciding which gym you should be training at in Thailand, this podcast episode will hopefully answer all your questions!

TMTG 059: The Principals of Family Life & Training Management

One of the most common concerns about training or lack there of is the limit of having to take care of a family, to look after your social circle, and make time for those who are closest to you.

Sean and I have made mistakes in both extremes. Limiting our training and perhaps not reaching our full potential, as well as limiting our time with significant others, family, and friends to get to the next level.

In this weeks podcast, we dissect these certain principles that we feel are important for being able to manage your time properly while balancing your work/life/family all at once.

TMTG 058: A Muay Thai Sparring Philosophy Discussion

We all love to spar. It's the time during training where we get to test the techniques and tactics we've learned throughout our bag work, pad work, and shadowboxing and see if the stuff we learning is actually applicable in a fight.

There are a number of Muay Thai sparring tips out there (like the ones I share with you below) but very rarely do we get to go more in-depth about the philosophy and strategy of sparring... and that's exactly what Paul and I decided to do in this weeks Muay Thai Guys podcast.

TMTG 057: The Muay Thai Guys Podcast is BACK (Finally!)

Wow. It's been awhile! It's not our fault though, I swear.

The past few months we haven't had a chance to bang out a podcast due to technical issues (Paul's laptop blowing up) and our schedules not syncing up properly. But now that Paul's laptop is fixed and we're both in the same timezone, we are able to get back into a steady groove of recording more Muay Thai Guys podcasts!

Since we haven't done a podcast for awhile, Paul and I have a lot of catching up to do. In this first episode back we basically just shoot the shit and catch up on everything that's going on with our training, life and much more.
